Once again it is the community who acted on information they received through the local press, which led to the recapturing of three escaped criminals. In an official statement from the provincial police spokesperson, the SAPS applaud the alertness and “willingness to work alongside the police” of the average Joe Citizen.
Last week we reported on the escape from lawful custody of five awaiting trail prisoners from the Witpoort police holding cells. Two prisoners, Paul Madira (19) initially arrested for rape and Lesiba Frans Machaba (27), arrested for burglary business, were recaptured by the police yesterday morning during an operation that was activated soon after receiving valuable information from community members.
The third escapee, Jappie Shiko (29) was cornered by members of the community at Phahladira Mall in Villa Nora policing area outside Lephalale and was handed over to the police. He was initially arrested for murder. All escapees will face additional charges of escaping from lawful custody.
The Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba has thanked community members for heeding their call for assistance and provided valuable information that led to the rearrested of these dangerous criminals.
The search for the remaining two escapees, 31-year old Bongani Sibanda who was arrested for business burglary and 39-year old Sipho Mpofu arrested for murder, is still continuing and anyone with information is requested to contact Detective WO Ratlou Morudu at 0824688931 or the Crime Stop number 0860010111 .
