A young man from Gauteng is recovering in Mediclinic Tzaneen after he suffered a serious motorbike accident in Agatha.

The accident happened yesterday afternoon when JD van Heerden (25) and a friend went scrambling along a firebreak in the Agatha area. JD is the cousin of well-known local, Billy McKechnie, the owner of Kings Walden Estate on the Agatha AH Road.

The two riders were approaching a straight, JD was in front and his friend close behind him. Suddenly JD disappeared. The firebreak had made a sharp drop and JD went tumbling about 20m down the hillside.

His friend rushed to his aid and alerted Billy and the emergency services. ER24 and members of Mountain Rescue extracted the injured rider and rushed him off to Mediclinic Tzaneen where he is currently recovering.

He suffered a fractured pelvis and two fractured vertebrae. He was rescued by the Mountain Rescue

Bulletin has received video footage taken from the Gopro camera of the friend who was riding behind JD at the time of the accident. We will also visit JD in his hospital bed this afternoon and the full story will be published in next week’s Bulletin.
