Local beauty Kayla Crous jetted off to Milan, Italy, on Saturday morning to grace the ramps of Fashion Week courtesy of international modelling house, Versace. This came after the Merensky High alumni was scouted in a nursery in Cape Town earlier this year.
“I had just come from the gym and was looking all the worse for wear actually as I walked through the parking lot of a local nursery,” she excitedly explained. “Two men walked up to me and introduced themselves as the owners of FanJam Modelling Agency and expressed their interest in having me in their studios.”
Crous said that she was a little suspicious at first but took their business cards anyway. “I forgot about them actually, but then two months later, in May, they contacted me again and I decided to give it a shot.”
One of the photographers at the agency posted a photograph of Kayla on his Instagram account which then caught the attention of a modelling scout from Versace. The scout contacted FanJam and the rest as they say is history.
“Modelling was like the last thing on my mind ever,” she exclaimed, “and next thing I know I’m being interviewed by Versace and getting ready to fly off to Europe!”
About the modelling industry, Kayla said she always had the wrong idea. “You only ever see the seedy side of the fashion game, but in South Africa everyone has been super helpful and friendly, even the other models. I can’t wait to experience the fashion week and see where this journey takes me.”
Kayla will be in Europe until the end of October and has already received an offer from another prestigious fashion house, Saint Laurent. During her stay in Italy, Kayla will be conducting interviews with both fashion houses and weighing up the options. For now, the former “kaalvoet plaaskind” from Tzaneen is lapping up the possibility of a bright future most girls only ever dream about.
Bulletin will keep in touch with Kayla during her stay abroad and will update on her progress.
